Clutter-free Boo Basket

So what is a boo basket? This is a newer trend that started during Covid times when people wanted to share the fun without the germs. A boo basket is similar to an Easter basket and I've seen them done in several different ways.

  1. A basket of treats you drop off at a neighbors' porch

  2. A basket of goodies you give your kids on October 1 to get excited for Halloween

  3. A basket of fun things to give someone who is too old to trick or treat or doesn't have trick or treating in their area.

The baskets I have seen are adorable, but the problem is that most of them are full of things will just add clutter. Not to mention, adding another thing to your mental load and to-do list. While some feel that boo baskets are another commercial trend to get you to buy more stuff, others really enjoy putting together a gift basket for loved ones.

So how do you make a boo basket without adding clutter? The key is to avoid things that have no long-term usage.

The Basket

You can re-use any basket or bin you already have; it doesn't have to be Halloween themed. Walk around your house and see if you have any baskets that would work, especially if you are gifting to people in your own household.

The Treats

  • Obviously candy is the go-to here. This is easy to find this time of year.

  • Homemade treats like chocolate dipped pretzels or cookies

  • Supplies for a fall treat, like caramel apples (caramels, sticks, and apples)

Outside of candy, there are lots of things you can add to a boo basket!

For Any Age

  • All orange! This is a fun way to shop and make it easy. Go to your regular grocery store and find things that are orange. They don't have to be Halloween themed, just get their favorite treats and snacks that are orange!

  • Legos. They have just come out with a series of Halloween Legos and Wednesday Legos.

  • Anything with a fall theme so that you can continue to use things after Halloween.

  • Cozy coloring book and markers

For Kids

  • Fall or Halloween books. These are fun to pull out in the fall and can be put away with your fall decor so you remember to take them out again next year.

  • Fall or Halloween shirts or pajamas. You could also just get some warmer pajamas for the cooler temps coming up if they aren't into holiday ones.

  • Pumpkin carving tools or stencils. Seems like these always break or go missing. Get a set now before you can't find them in stores.

  • Mini pumpkins and paint

  • Color your own trick or treat bag. The Mondo Lama brand at Target has a lot of cute and affordable holiday craft kits.

  • Would You Rather book or printable. You can find a ton of Halloween themed would you rather lists as printables on Etsy. They give you some fun conversation starters for family dinners.

  • A flashing necklace or bracelet. Almost every retailer will have something like this. Yes, it seems like a gift that would cause clutter, but have your child wear it for trick or treating, and you'll always be able to find them in a group of kids. An LED version instead of a glow stick will be much brighter and won't dim by the time you are halfway home.
