How to Hide Cords for Plugged-In Electronics

We love our electronics—but we don’t love the messy cords and wires that come with them. Whether it’s a home office filled with tech, an entertainment center with tangled cables, or a kitchen counter cluttered with appliance cords, exposed cords can make even the most well-designed space feel chaotic.

Sometimes cords have to stay plugged in, but that doesn’t mean they have to be visible. With a few strategic solutions, you can keep your space clean, stylish, and functional—cords and all.

1. Use Cord Covers for a Professional Look

Cord covers (sometimes called raceway or d-line) are an easy and affordable way to hide cords along walls. These can be painted to match your walls so they blend in beautifully with your decor and can be trimmed to fit any space. Use them to run cords along baseboards or down walls from mounted TVs.

2. Mount Power Strips Out of Sight

Instead of letting power strips sit on the floor, mount them under desks, behind furniture, or on the back of media cabinets. This gets cords off the ground and reduces the visual clutter, especially in tight spaces. Sometimes desks will have a channel where a power strip can sit. You can use zip ties or strong command tape to stick them to furniture legs as well.

3. Use Furniture to Your Advantage

Strategically place furniture in front of outlets or power strips to naturally conceal plugged-in cords. Desks with back panels, bookshelves with solid sides, or entertainment consoles with cord cutouts are ideal. If you're working with open-backed furniture, use zip ties or adhesive clips to guide cords neatly along legs or down the back.

4. Try a Cable Management Box

Cable management boxes are designed to corral power strips and the mess of plugs that come with them. These sleek boxes hide the cords inside and only expose what’s necessary. They’re perfect for desk areas, behind TVs, or near nightstands.

5. Use Cable Clips and Hooks

Adhesive cable clips and command hooks are your best friends when it comes to managing visible cords. Use them to guide cords tightly along the backs of furniture, underneath tabletops, or even across the underside of shelves. They’re inexpensive, renter-friendly, and easy to reposition. They don't look as nice as cord covers, but they will do a good job.

6. Label Everything

While this doesn’t hide cords, it does make life easier when you need to unplug or move something. Use cord labels or washi tape to mark what each plug is for, so you can stay organized even when everything is hidden out of sight.

7. Invest in Tech-Savvy Furniture

Modern furniture often comes with built-in cord channels, wireless charging, or hidden outlets. If you’re upgrading a space, consider investing in desks, nightstands, or media consoles with built-in cord management features. These pieces do the work for you, making organization effortless.

A Cleaner Look, a Calmer Mind

Cluttered cords can be a visual and mental distraction—but with these simple tricks, you can enjoy all the benefits of your electronics without sacrificing your space’s aesthetic.
