[2 Weeks Before Christmas]

As the holiday season approaches, the excitement of welcoming friends and family into our homes often comes with the daunting task of preparing a guest room. Many of us find that this space has accumulated clutter, since it's easy to throw things in and shut the door! This week, we’ll explore practical steps to organize and declutter your guest room. By the end, you’ll have a warm and welcoming space ready to host.

Assess the Space

Before you start decluttering, take a moment to assess the current state of your guest room.

What needs to stay in this room and what can be stored elsewhere?

Does it look like Santa's workshop in there? Give yourself a deadline for completing those holiday tasks well before guests are set to arrive.

Will you need to access anything in here while guests are staying? If so, consider moving it out or at least making it easy to get to if needed.

Declutter

Begin by removing any items that don’t belong in the guest room that can easily be put in their correct home. At this point, just put all of those things in a pile so you can put everything away when you are done with this room.

After doing an initial declutter, take a look at what's left. If it is still tight in the room, take a second pass and see if there's anything else that could go, either in another room or be taken to a donation center.

Check the Closet

If your guest room has a closet, do a quick check of it for anything else that could be decluttered. You don't have to be able to offer hanging closet space to your guests, but it is nice if it's available.

Create a Welcoming Atmosphere

Once you’ve decluttered, focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere. Make the bed with fresh sheets (if you can't find these, wait until next week's post) and open the curtains. Give the room a good clean if it hasn't been used in a while.

Make sure there is a spot to set a suitcase or other luggage and check that outlets are easy to access for device charging.

Lay out a stack of clean towels and wash cloths so your guests don't have to ask or wonder which ones are for them. You can also leave extra blankets or pillows in the room for optimal comfort. (if you can't find these, check next week's post)

Some little things you can add that make your guests feel special include: a seasonal candle, fresh flowers or a holiday arrangement, a couple holiday decorations, bottles of water or a few of their favorite snacks.

Also helpful, write down the Wi-Fi password so they don't have to ask for it!

Organize Your Guest Room for a Welcoming Space

Organizing and decluttering your guest room for the holidays doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By following these simple steps, you can create a welcoming and comfortable space for your visitors. Unless you don't really like your in-laws that you have to host and your goal is to make it so they never ask to stay again. (I'm kidding, I'm kidding!)
